Cimex designs and builds a new video-on-demand service for the social care sector.

Brief

Cimex.s long working relationship with the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has produced a number of successful and innovative e-learning projects.

To add to this online provision of support, SCIE asked Cimex to create an online video-on-demand service for social care professionals. The service provides users with video content that shows real-life scenarios faced by carers and support staff on a day-to-day basis.

Solution

Cimex followed a user-centred design approach for this project, which ensured that the final website met the needs of the SCIE as an organisation as well as the expectations of the target user base.

The first stage was to create a clickable and navigable prototype for the service to demonstrate a series of user journeys. A handful of key page types were built to explain the proof of concept to key project stakeholders.

Once the prototype was agreed, it was tested in a series of sessions and workshops with a number of users from a variety of social care backgrounds. Eye-tracking technology was used to identify navigational issues that hampered a user.s ability to complete a simple task (ie: find a video on a particular topic and view it in full).

The findings of this user research were then used to inform the final design of the service and the video player, which was delivered through a combination of the Veotag and MulticastMedia platforms.

The site is designed to ensure full SCIE branding throughout, and dynamic elements such as mouseovers, carousels and fades were added to make the user experience more engaging and appealing.

Result

Social Care TV now features more than 28 video based training resources that are categorised across nine areas of interest.

Viewers can rate a video once they have finished watching, and can download a copy of the video or transcript directly from the video page.
